Step Back into the Past - Enjoy Fort Canning at 'Happy Feet', Sunday, 25 September

Singapore seems to be all about the new: new buildings, new ideas, new technology. And, that's good, but every now and then, we need to get off the treadmill towards the future and step back to our calmer, quieter, greener past. Fort Canning Park, right next to the Orchard Road shopping district, allows us to do that.   fort canning

History oozes out of Fort Canning Park's every pore. Present day Fort Canning is believed to have been the seat of power of the 14th century rulers of what was then known as Temasek or 'Sea Town'. Relics from that time can be viewed in the park. When the British arrived, they made the area into a military base, and evidence of that can still be seen in the Fort Gate area of Fort Canning Park. Indeed, the park can rightfully claim to be the most historic part of SG.

Yes, the history is great, but for most people, enjoying the beauty of nature constitutes the main reason to visit Fort Canning Park. The park's natural allure includes the Spice Garden, Princess Pond, Heritage Trees, Fort Canning Green and the Butterfly Garden at Stamford Green.
